Smartphone Theatre: GEMF Musical Tour of Medieval Galway

Galway Early Music’s Musical Walking Tour of Medieval Galway is time-travelling at its best.  Spanish merchant Captain Moreno has arrived in Galway, a town he knows well and loves, with a shipment of wine.  He takes his shipmate (that’s you!) on a tour of this lively town.  Along the way you visit some of the famous sites in Galway and hear the sounds and the music of a medieval town.
Unlike any walking tour you’ve done before, this tour plays with time and your perceptions of your surroundings.  Captain Moreno’s comments to you, his shipmate, place you firmly in medieval Galway, and the site-appropriate historical music and soundscapes increase this perception, yet you are looking at modern Galway.  The audio experience is enhanced by illustrations from Peigi Dooley’s map of Medieval Galway and information about the music you are hearing on the screen of your phone. More than a tour, this is a imaginative and creative experience.
Using smartphone technology, GPS and a free app called 7Scenes, Máiréad Ni Chróinín has devised this new and creative way to experience the past, which is available any day, any time for visitors and Galwegians alike.   Máiréad, a co-partner of Moonfish Theatre Company, has recently started a PhD in Digital Humanities in NUI, Galway in which she is studying the use of smartphones and smartphone technology in theatre events. The tour was orginally commissioned by Galway Early Music for the Galway Early Music Festival in May 2012 and is now available for the foreseeable future.
GEM would like you all to try the tour! All you need is a smartphone, headphones or earphones, the free app “7Scenes”, an instruction card and a little time.  If you can’t get your hands on an instruction card, you can watch a guide to the  tour on youtube.  Scan the QR code in this article, follow this link  http://tinyurl.com/6qhpb9w or search for GEMF Tour of Medieval Galway on youtube. The instruction card is available at the City Museum, the Tourist Office and in the Red Earl’s Hall. During the Volvo ocean race, information and demonstrations of the tour are taking place in the NUI, Galway tent.
And if you do the tour, please leave feedback for GEM and Mairead so that we can keep improving the experience!
