CHIC featuring Nile Rodgers, at the Festival Big Top
Galway Arts Festival and the Róisín Dubh are proud to present CHIC at the Festival Big Top on Thursday 19th July with special guests. The performance promises to be one of the music highlights and biggest festival party of the summer in Galway.
Audiences to the Festival Big Top can expect an incredible live show from one of the greatest party bands of all time if CHIC’s 2009 performance at the Electric Picnic is anything to go by.
Arguably the greatest disco/funk band of all time, CHIC debuted in the late 1970’s, dominating and rejuvenating the fading disco scene. Their distinctive approach, categorised by Niles Rodger’s rhythm guitar, not only resulted in some of the most successful singles of the era, but also helped to lay the groundwork for some of the most enduring and prolific musical styles of the 1980’s.
The band’s first singles were runaway club smash hits, but it was their second album, C’est Chic, and the first single from it, Le Freak that cemented their position as the kings of disco. The second single I Want Your Love helped the album become one of the only disco albums ever to go platinum. Follow up single Good Times reacher number one.
The 1980’s saw Rodgers and Edwards move more into production work, becoming involved with some of the biggest records of the era. In 1980 they wrote and produced the album Diana for Diana Ross.
In addition to this, Rodgers rounded off the decade by producing Madonna’s blockbusteralbumMaterial Girl, David Bowie’s Let’s Dance album as well as seminal works by Duran Duran, Jeff Beck and Mick Jagger. He is currently working with French electronic superstars Daft Punk on their new album.
Special guests on the night are the wonderful Nouvelle Vague.
