-Robert Micheau-Vernez Considered one of Brittany’s Leading Artists of the 20th Century

Galway City Museum will this week open a  major retrospective of the work of one of Brittany’s leading 20th century artists, Robert Micheau-Vernez, with two floors of exhibitions encompassing a wide range of the artist’s work – including ceramic figurines, large-scale poster work and colourful depictions of French and Breton life –  a collection for which he is renowned in his homeplace.

The exhibition has been brought to Galway through the work of the Galway-Lorient Committee and was initiated by the late Manager of the Town Hall Theatre, Michael Diskin, who passed away a number of months ago.  Michael was a key promoter of cultural links between Galway and Lorient throughout his professional career and was keenly interested in bringing the work of Micheau-Vernez to the west of Ireland.

Robert Micheau-Vernez, who was born in Brest, is regarded as one of Brittany’s leading 20th century artists.  He thought of himself as an artist from Brittany, rather than a ‘Breton artist’, yet his work has left a clear stamp of Breton identity through the many ceramic figurines of Breton dancers, and the iconic poster work for the many Inter-Celtique festivals from 1971 onwards.  He was a renowned ‘colour technician’ and his largescale paintings of French and Breton scenes have garnered many admirers for their use of colour and light.

The exhibition will officially be opened on Thursday, 2nd August, 12 noon, by the Mayor of Galway City, Cllr. Terry O’Flaherty, along with the late artist’s son, Robert Micheau-Vernez, and will run until November.

There will be a short reception and photocall on Thursday at 12 noon in the Museum with Mayor of Galway City, Cllr. Terry O’Flaherty, along with the late artist’s son, Robert Micheau-Vernez.
