In the very heart of the cold season comes Music for Galway’s aptly named Midwinter Festival to spread cheer and warmth on the weekend of the 25th – 27th of January. Sponsored by DERI and NUI Galway, the title for this year’s festival is Beethoven: Genius, Passion and the Irish connection, in which Music for Galway will celebrate the great composer and his connection to Ireland and Galway in Galway’s Town Hall Theatre. An international cast will descend on the city for the event, including Osiris Piano Trio and soprano Charlotte Riedijk from the Netherlands, Paul Roe, clarinet, Robin Tritschler, tenor and pianist Rebecca Čápová from Ireland, to surprise with an unusual programme of piano solos, trios, and Irish poems put to music by Beethoven. The music will be complemented by actor Rod Goodall’s readings from the letters of Beethoven as translated by Galway scholar Emily Anderson, whose translations published in the 1960s brought Beethoven’s letters to the English speaking world. Join the celebration of Beethoven in Galway, listen to his innermost thoughts, hopes and fears, and experience the hope and passion of his music through the performances of Europe’s finest musicians as the MidWinter Festival drives back the cold of January and hastens the Spring.
