THEATRECORP PRESENTS MEASURE FOR MEASURE SHAKESPEARE

Measure for Measure posterTHEATRECORP PRESENTS MEASURE FOR MEASURE SHAKESPEARE, BLACK BOX THEATRE GALWAY, 29THJANUARY – FEBRUARY 2ND

To whom shall I complain ? If I told this, who would believe me? ” This play, rarely seen in the West of Ireland, has sharp parallels with today’s world. Like our own, the repressive atmosphere of Vienna is a sharply divided society, of pristine courts, brothels and prisons, where the rich and powerful can disguise their mistakes whilst others pay for them. Lust, emotional blackmail, injustice and duplicity run through the play as the characters deal with their dark desires.

When Angelo, the Duke’s deputy re-establishes a law that prohibits sex outside marriage, a young man, Claudio is condemned to death for making his girlfriend pregnant . When Claudio’s sister, Isabella, comes to Angelo to plead for his life, Angelo sets a train of events in motion which could bring tragedy for all.

Theatrecorp’s seventh classic production will be presented in raw ensemble style, which is a style the company embraced in many of its previous productions. What is really exciting about this production is that Director Max Hafler and his cast and design team will be utilising a specific acting technique in rehearsal, the Chekhov Technique, to explore and work on the text. Max Hafler, who has trained with the renowned Michael Chekhov Association in the US, has been working with actors extensively in this technique.

The actors are all from the West of Ireland as is the crew. The actors are Emmet Byrne, John Cullen, Daniel  Guinnane, Mary Monaghan, Reidin Ni Thuama, Darragh O’Brien, Sarah O’Toole, John Rogers. The show reunites set designer Mary Doyle and lighting designer Mike Byrne who both worked on Theatrecorp’s last show ‘The Glass Menagerie’.

Measure for Measure is a co partnership between Theatrecorp, NUI Galway and the Town Hall Theatre Galway.
